India has a rich architectural legacy dating to an ancient past. Timeless monuments , magnificient temples , and breathtaking sites… India never ceases to lure the travellers .

Of its prestigious monuments and natural wonders , sixteen cultural and five natural sites of India have already been declared as the world heritage sites by the General Conference of UNESCO. These sites are known to have an exceptional interest and universal value , the protection of which is the concern of all mankind .

GWALIOR

According to a legend , Gwalior derives its name from a great sage Gwalipa who cured a chief of the Kachwaha Dan suffering from Leprosy. Gwallior’s strategic position between North and South India made it an important possession and was captured by several ruling houses . The first historical holders of the city were the Huns . Held in succession by The Mughals, Jats, Marathas and the British , Gwallior was finally handed over to Jiya Ji Rao Scindia at a formal darbar in 1885 .

Places of Interest : The Cenotraphs, Man Singh Palace, Gujari Mahal, Suruj Kund.

Reach : By Air :Well linked all with major towns . By Rail : Gwalior is connected to all major cities in India.

PATTADAKAL

Pattadakal , in Karnataka, illustrates the Chalukyan art which , in the 7th and 8th centuries A.D , under the Chalukya dynasty, achieved a haromonious blend of architectural forms from the north and south of India.

There is an impressive series of nine Hindu temples , as well as a Jain sanctuary. The oldest temple at Pattadakal is the Sangamesvara Temple built by Vijayadita Satyasraya. It is a simple but a massive structure.

The Temple Of Virupaksha, built around 740 A.D by Queen Lokamahadevi to commemorate her husband’s victory over the kings from the south is a masterpiece in itself.

The sculptural art of the early Chalukyas is characterised by grace and delicate details. The narrative reliefs illustrate various episodes from the great Hindu epics -Ramayana and Mahabharata , from the holy book – Bhagavata and tales of Panchatantra.

Travel Information : Open on all weekdays from sunrise to sunset.

Best time to visit : Ideal time to visit Pattadakal is October to February.

Where to Stay : One can stay at Badami or Bijapur.

BUDDHIST MONUMENTS AT SANCHI

Sanchi is known for its masterpieces of Buddhist art Buddhist stupas , monastries, temples and pillars dating from the 3rd century B.C tp the 12th century A.D. The site consists of mainly three stupas.

The most famous of the stupas – Stupa No 1 is a hemispherical dome, crowned by a triple umbrella , 36.60 meters in diameter. A railing encircles the stupa cut by four exquisitely carved gateways or toranas. The archivates as well as various faces of the upright pillars are sculpted with depiction of religious subjects , incidents and stories fro the life of buddha.

Stupa No.2 consists of the Buddhist symbol like the Bodhi tree , a throne and the wheel of law. There are elaborate carvings on the pillars flanking the entrances.

Travel Information : Open on all weekdays from sunsrise to sunset.

Best Time To Visit : November to February.

Places to Visit : Vidisha , Udaygiri Caves , Gyraspur , Udaypur.
